Adopted by the YKBA Committee on 6 October 2026
The Yarraville Kingsville Business Association supports making the Anderson Street level crossing safer. But we also believe we need a solution that keeps Yarraville Village connected and accessible and supports the businesses that trade here.
Over the past few months, YKBA has kept members informed about the Level Crossing Removal Project, shared alternative proposals and encouraged traders to take part in the consultation process.
We now believe it’s important to be clear about what YKBA supports and what we want to see properly investigated.
1. Keep Anderson Street open
Anderson Street is an important connection through the heart of Yarraville Village. YKBA supports retaining vehicle access across the railway line and believes the impact of closing this connection on local businesses, customers, residents and the wider Village needs to be taken seriously.
2. Investigate reinstating the former pedestrian underpass
There was a pedestrian underpass at Anderson Street prior to 1997. We support properly investigating whether this connection can be reinstated and upgraded to meet today’s accessibility and safety requirements.
3. Make the existing crossing safer
We support investigating improvements to the existing level crossing, including modern boom-gate and safety technology, to make it safer for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and everyone moving through the Village.
4. Protect Yarraville Village’s heritage and established landscape
The alternative solution being advocated would avoid the need to demolish heritage buildings and would preserve the mature elm trees that contribute to the character and identity of Yarraville Village.
Finding a better solution
This isn’t about choosing between safety and keeping our Village connected. We believe we should be looking for a solution that achieves both.
YKBA supports the work of the Save Yarraville Village working group, which is developing alternative options for Anderson Street, and believes these alternatives deserve to be properly considered before permanent changes are made.
Susie George, publican of the Railway Hotel Yarraville, is coordinating trader feedback for the Save Yarraville Village working group. If you have information or experiences that could help inform that work, we encourage you to get involved.

YKBA is here to represent our traders
YKBA remains the advocacy body for our members. If you have concerns about the Anderson Street project — or any other issue affecting your business or our local trading precinct — we want to hear from you.
Our role is to make sure the voice of Yarraville and Kingsville businesses is heard by Council, State Government and other decision-makers.
We want a safer Anderson Street. We also want a connected, accessible and thriving Yarraville Village. We believe we can have both.
